Intern – Business and Peace - Horn of Africa

The Netherlands Institute of International Relations ‘Clingendael‘ is a leading think tank and academy on international affairs. Through our analyses, training and public debate we aim to inspire and equip governments, businesses, and civil society in order to contribute to a secure, sustainable and just world.  

 

The Institute has three departments: Research, Academy and Corporate Staff. Within the Research department we are looking for a:

 

Intern – Business and Peace - Horn of Africa

36 hours per week (full time)

 

The Conflict Research Unit (CRU) is a specialised team within the Clingendael Institute, conducting applied, policy-oriented research and developing practical tools that assist national and multilateral governmental and non-governmental organisations in their efforts to develop and implement more effective policies and programming on stability, development and rule of law in fragile and conflict-affected countries.

The Clingendael Conflict Research Unit (CRU) has an opening for an Intern for the team working on informal economics and conflict dynamics in the Horn of Africa (as part of the programme of CRU), from 1 February 2024 – 31 July 2024 (a six-month period).

This internship focuses on local formal and informal economics in the Horn of Africa, with a particular focus on the economic dynamics underlying formal and informal institutions providing governance and stability, as well as individuals’ ability to establish a livelihood in such environments.


Job description

Relevant tasks are:

  • Research assistance for projects on the Horn of Africa of the informal economy by gathering    quantitative and qualitative data and contributing to data analysis
  • Contribute to writing background material, drafts, and web content.
  • Contribute to the visualisation of research findings in the form of infographics and data dashboards.
  • Assistance for the organization of (closed) events as part of research projects and for the dissemination of research findings.

 

Qualifications and experience

We would be interested if the following requirements are met:

  • BA degree relevant for this internship and current enrolment for MA degree (e.g. African studies, political science/IR, conflict studies, political economy).
  • Affinity with politics and conflict dynamics in the Horn of Africa.
  • Excellence in research and research methods, good English writing skills.
  • Service minded, social skills, capable of reaching deadlines.
  • Capable of working independently on the basis of instructions, team player.
  • Network-oriented, feeling at home in international environment.

 

Technical requirements:

  • Enrollment in an MA program
  • EER/Switzerland nationality OR holder of a Dutch study visa

 

Clingendael offers:

  • A stipend of € 550,- gross per month (in case of 36 hours per week).
