The Netherlands Institute of International Affairs Clingendael is an independent think tank and academy for international relations, based in The Hague. We contribute to a secure, sustainable, and just world through our research, training programmes and by stimulating the public debate. The Institute has three departments: Research, Academy and Corporate Staff. Within the EU and Global Affairs Research Unit we are looking for an:

 

Intern / EU and Global Affairs Research Unit (with a focus on EU Agriculture)

36 hours per week (full time)

Starting date internship: 1 September 2025

 

The Clingendael Institute is currently looking for a highly motivated and competent intern to support its EU and Global Affairs research unit for a period of 4 months. The EU & Global Affairs Unit consists of about 20 researchers (at junior, medior and senior level) and several Associate Fellows and interns. The research department covers a wide range of research programmes, including inter alia research on China, migration and the geopolitics of technology. In the programme on critical resources research is undertaken on agricultural and food policy and security.

 

This internship will focus specifically on supporting these research efforts, more specifically with regard to the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy and its reform, the EU’s Multiannual Financial Framework and efforts to making agricultural and food supply chains more sustainable.

 

Job description

Relevant tasks are:

  • Research assistance consisting of desk-research, preparing and conducting interviews;
  • Assisting in writing reports based on research findings;
  • Project support for the research team with meetings, publications and outreach;
  • Organisational and logistical assistance for research missions, seminars and (public) events, and (external) meetings;

 

Qualifications and experience

We would be interested in candidates meeting the following requirements:

  • Enrolled in a relevant MA or MSc program (political science, international relations, European studies, agricultural economics etc.);
  • Strong interest in EU agriculture policies
  • Proven research and writing skills. Comfortable with both qualitative and policy-oriented research;
  • Organisational skills;
  • Good working knowledge in English (written and spoken); knowledge of Dutch is considered an asset.
  • Team player, but also capable of working independently on the basis of instructions;
  • Good communication skills, comfortable with working and functioning in a diplomatic and professional environment;
  • Flexibility, capable of working under pressure and reaching deadlines.

 

Eligibility

  • Candidates must be enrolled as a student at a university during their internship;
  • The internship period is six months with the possibility of extension. Interns should be able to commit to working 36 hours a week.
