The Netherlands Institute of International Affairs Clingendael is an independent think tank and academy for international relations, based in The Hague. We contribute to a secure, sustainable, and just world through our research, training programmes and by stimulating the public debate. We work with partners across public and private sectors, including policymakers, business executives, the Dutch armed forces, law enforcement agencies, diplomats, politicians and NGOs. The Institute has three departments: Research, Academy and Corporate Staff. Within the EU and Global Affairs Research Unit we are looking for an:

 

Intern / EU and Global Affairs Research Unit (EU Migration & Asylum)

36 hours per week (full time)

Starting date internship: as soon as possible

 

The Clingendael Institute is currently looking for a highly motivated and competent intern to support its EU and global affairs research unit for a period of 6 months.

The EU and Global Affairs research unit comprises five thematic programmes, focussing on a) European integration and politics, b) the European neighbourhood and Western Balkans c) Geopolitics, d) Sustainability, and e) China. Main clients include the Netherlands’ Ministry of Foreign Affairs, EU institutions, as well as the private sector. This internship will be related to programmes a and b, and revolve specifically around the external dimension of EU migration and asylum policy, Dutch bilateral migration partnerships, and strategic opportunities for nearshoring to third partner countries. 

 

Job description

Relevant tasks are:

  • Research assistance consisting of desk-research, preparing and conducting interviews, survey research;
  • Assisting in writing reports based on research findings;
  • Project support for the research team with meetings, publications and outreach;
  • Organisational and logistical assistance for research missions, seminars and (public) events, and (external) meetings;

 

Qualifications and experience

We would be interested in candidates meeting the following requirements:

  • Enrolled in a relevant MA or MSc program (political science, international relations, migration studies, etc.); additional business or political economy background are considered an asset;
  • Strong interest in international cooperation on migration, Dutch and EU migration and asylum governance (forced and labour migration);
  • Proven research and writing skills. Comfortable with both qualitative and policy-oriented research;
  • Organisational skills;
  • Good working knowledge in English (written and spoken); proficiency in French and/or Arabic;
  • Team player, but also capable of working independently on the basis of instructions;
  • Good communication skills, comfortable working and functioning in a diplomatic and professional environment;
  • Flexibility, capable of working under pressure and reaching deadlines.

 

Eligibility

  • Candidates must be enrolled as a student at a university during their internship;
  • Candidates must be eligible to conduct an internship in the Netherlands as visa applications are not supported
  • The internship period is six months with the possibility of extension. Interns should be able to commit to working 36 hours a week.
