Intern EU & Global Affairs - Climate, Energy and Environmental Security

The Netherlands Institute of International Affairs Clingendael is an independent think tank and academy for international relations, based in The Hague. We contribute to a secure, sustainable, and just world through our research, training programmes and by stimulating the public debate. We work with partners across public and private sectors, including policymakers, business executives, the Dutch armed forces, law enforcement agencies, diplomats, politicians and NGOs. The Institute has three departments: Research, Academy and Corporate Staff. Within Research  we are looking for a:

Intern EU & Global Affairs Unit – Climate, Energy and Environmental Security

 

You will support Clingendael’s work on climate security within the EU and Global Affairs Unit. This internship position is part of one of the three units of Clingendael Research, the EU & Global Affairs Unit, which consists of about 18 (senior, medior and junior) Research Fellows and several Associate Fellows and interns. The internship is for a period of six months (with possibility to extend), starting 1 September 2025.

 

Job description
Relevant tasks of this internship are:

  • Research assistance with a specific focus on policies to reduce negative security impact of climate change in areas where this issue is most pressing (Middle-East, Sahel, Horn of Africa, and South Asia);
  • Research assistance with a specific focus on decarbonized defense and green technologies for the military;
  • Writing and editing content for the website www.planetarysecurityinitiative.org;
  • Assistance in organizing (international) events;
  • Assistance in organizing outreach on publications and events;
  • Developing content for social media (Twitter, LinkedIn);
  • Monitoring media, social media, events and publications on the climate-security nexus.

 

Qualifications and experience

We would be interested if the following requirements are met:

  • Applicants should be enrolled in a relevant Bachelor or Master degree programme (e.g. communication, political science, international relations, international development or similar) and eligible to work in the Netherlands;*
  • Knowledge of climate security, knowledge of south Asia;
  • Excellent writing skills and good command of the English language;
  • Knowledge of the Dutch language is a benefit
  • Enthusiasm for and curiosity in climate security and its policy relevance;
  • Excellent communicative and social skills (service minded);
  • Capable of working independently and being well-organized;
  • Team player, capable of working under pressure;
  • International experience is a plus.

*Candidates must be enrolled as a student at a university during their internship.

Internship compensation

Interns receive a compensation of € 550 gross per month for a full-time position as well as a commuting compensation.
