Intern – ‘Prospects for political reform and renewal’, Middle East

36 hours per week (full time)

The Conflict Research Unit (CRU) is a specialised team within the Clingendael Institute, conducting applied, policy-oriented research and developing practical tools that assist national and multilateral governmental and non-governmental organisations in their efforts to develop and implement more effective policies and programming on stability, development and rule of law in fragile and conflict-affected countries.

The Clingendael Conflict Research Unit (CRU) has an opening for an Intern for the team working on prospects for political reform and renewal in the Middle East (as part of its Middle East research program), from 1 February 2024 - 31 July 2024 (a six-month period).

This internship examines what kinds of political reform and renewal are possible under conditions of authoritarian governance. This matters because the conditions that gave rise to the extended ‘Arab Uprisings’ worsen while improvements in the quality of governance remain modest. Most of the program’s work is currently on protests in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Iraq and Iran, as well as the various modernization drives in the Arab countries on the Persian Gulf.

Job description

Relevant tasks are:

  • Assisting research on protests, repression and modernization by gathering quantitative and qualitative data, and by contributing to data analysis.
  • Collecting literature on the supply of and demand for reform in different Middle Eastern states.
  • Drafting background material, research building blocks and web content on topics indicated.
  • Supporting the organization of (closed) events as part of research projects and for the dissemination of research findings.
  • Contributing to the visualisation of research findings in the form of infographics and data dashboards.

Apart from the internship supporting the typical variety of projects and research efforts already underway, the intern and his/her supervisor will identify one larger research task for the duration of the internship that can lead to an independent publication.
